U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met leaders of Pakistan’s newly elected government in Islamabad Wednesday to shore up bilateral relations that have sunk to their lowest point in the past year.
Pompeo’s delegation held formal talks with Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and his team at the Foreign Ministry before calling on Prime Minister Imran Khan at his office.
Qureshi highlighted the need to “reset bilateral ties on the basis of mutual trust and respect,” saying, “Safeguarding Pakistan’s national interests will remain supreme priority,” a ministry spokesman said without elaborating.
