In April 1996, former Pakistani cricket star, political hopeful, and future Prime Minister Imran Khan spoke to ITN about his plans to build a movement opposing the government of Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and the Pakistan People’s Party. Days before the interview, on 15 April, a bomb blast tore through the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital in Lahore, killing six people and injuring over 30. The hospital, which was founded by Khan, was the only cancer hospital in Pakistan at the time. Khan stated the bomb attack, which took place a day after he publicly discussed launching a new political party, was intended to deter him from pursuing his political ambitions. “I certainly am not deterred at all,” Khan told ITN. “You can never achieve anything in life if you worry about dying.”
